"Adopt-A-Room"

The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center
The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center’s (FCC) building is more than 50 years old and is in great need of repair and renovation. The FCC is one of many programs that operates within The Children’s Center Inc. Vice-President of Development, Eliza K. Quigley, and designer Erica Farmer of eje Designs, initiated the “Adopt-A-Room” program with the hope that our generous Galveston community members would sponsor the rooms to be made over with fresh paint and new furniture. To encourage new beginnings, the idea was to update 14 client rooms, the common areas, the kitchen and the restrooms. By selecting a room and choosing between a “turn-key” package or a “do-it-yourself” package, donors would a “adopt” a room to be remodeled. In May of 2010, former Galveston Mayor, Lyda Ann Thomas generously hosted a small event to set the plan in motion. And in-motion it was! 12 of 14 rooms were immediately adopted and the renovations have started!

The Children’s Center (TCC) would like to thank and show recognition to the following generous donors for their commitment to making a difference in our community and adopting rooms at the Family Crisis Center:

• Mosquito Café, Patricia & Stephen Rennick
• Malin International Ship Repair & Dry Dock, Craig Marston
• Lyda Ann Thomas
• Ann Simmons & Cara Moore
• Kempner Capital Management
• Erica, Lisa, Maggie and Bonnie Farmer
• Moriah & Rod Crosby
• Alta Vista Development, Pamela Gabriel & Lynn Clore
• Penny & Tom Haber
• Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream, The Hart Family
• Galveston Restaurant Group, Smecca & Hart Families
• Linda & Tom Jordan

TCC would also like to thank The Junior League of Galveston, Alex Gonzalez of Creative Combinations, Inc., Rick Gaido, Fichera Builders Inc., the Marilyn & Karl Haupt Family, Kelli Acosta, Star Fine Furniture and Sherwin-Williams for their generous contributions. Additional special thanks to community volunteer, Boy Scout, and 15 year-old Ball Preparatory Academy Freshman, Robert Haupt. Robert gave his time to paint the dining area, hallways & all common areas of the Family Crisis Center. Robert is working on meeting all requirements for promotion to Eagle Scout and has only 3 merit badges left to complete.

The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center (FCC) is the only homeless family shelter in the county and serves more than 700 homeless families annually. At any given time, more than 3⁄4 of that number are children ranging in age from birth to 17. Clients are provided case management services, parenting classes, employment services and support to help them transition to permanent housing.
There are still rooms available for adoption. Please help us make an impact by creating a special environment for the parents and their children while they regain direction and support in order to succeed.

For more information, please contact Eliza Quigley or Kristin Gottlob at 409.762.5300.
