Emergency Shelter for Families and Older Homeless Youth The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center provides shelter services for homeless parents and their children and for older homeless youth ages 18-21. The center has remained at full occupancy since opening in August of 1998. The family crisis center provides ten suites, serving between 30 and 35 individuals. Older homeless youth utilize the suites in dormitory style with up to four males or four females utilizing a suite. Homeless families are provided a suite accommodating their family size. Most of the parents who come to the center are single head of household females. On rare occasions the center has served couples with children or single head of household males. The majority of older homeless youth are youth whom have become age 18 in the CPS system and then services have been terminated. The Galveston Island Family Crisis Center has served developmentally disabled youth, as well as, youth experiencing behavioral and emotional problems. Case Managers and Counselors support clients with direct services and network with other community agencies to seek employment and acquisition of permanent housing for residents. Most of the clients need skill development in personal living, home living, community living, educational and vocational areas to effectively support independent living.
